In the pocket Annemarie pulled out Ellens star of David necklace. She went back outside by her parents and asked her dad if he could fix the clasp of the necklace. He said yes and then Annemarie said the until Ellen gets back she'll wear the necklace.

Afterward. . .

In the Afterward chapter Lois Lowery tells you how much of the story is true. Annemarie Johansen is not real, obviously. Lois's friend, Annelise Platt, lived in Copenhagen during the years of the German occupation. Lois says that she by Annelise's descripton and personal deprivation that her family and neighbors went through. It says that Denmark surrendered itself to Germany in 1940, because the country was so small and they couldn't fight. As most the other characters were only part of her imagination that she brought to life during the book, King Christian was not. He surrendered to Germany that year and the soilders moved in over night. Though the soilders never controlled him. He did ride along the streets every morning to greet his people and the story about the Soilder asking the Dasnish teenager about who the king was, is true too. The hankercheif was real too. Some Swedish scientists created a powerful powder composed of cocaine and dried rabbits blood that numbed the dogs noses when they sniffed at it. Peter was based on a young, 21 years old, man who was part of the Danish Resistane, just as Peter was, and was put to death. Lois explained how she went through books from this time period and found a picture of this man and how her heart broke when she reada about his story because of how youg he was. So she was determined to tell his story.

VERY GOOD DESCRIPTIONS!
Theme

The theme is how bravery is not thinking about the dangers, just thinking of what you must do. An example of that is when Annemarie was running through the woods to get the basket to Uncle Henrik and she heard the growling. She didn't stop and run back because she was afraid she kept going without thinking twice about it.
